Vlnohraní – Musical Menagerie

Nature has always been a source of musical inspiration. Composers strive to capture not only its beauty but also the voices of the animals that are an integral part of it. Some depict these sounds through musical imitations, while others tell stories in which animals take on human traits or play key roles in people’s lives. Through live musicians, the roar of a lion, the flight of a butterfly, and the song of a swan will come to life. This is The Musical Menagerie, an interactive concert by Czech Radio for children ages 5 to 10. Actress and Czech Radio Vltava host Jana Trojanová will guide the audience through this lighthearted program about classical music.

“When it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz, there are two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else,” wrote the website allaboutjazz.com, referring to another of the artists making their debut at the Prague Spring in 2026. Jazz pianist Fred Hersch has been an influential creative force on the international jazz scene for more than three decades. The American monthly Vanity Fair described him as “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade”, while The New Yorker saluted him as a “living legend”. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hersch has received an incredible seventeen Grammy nominations. He has also earned other prestigious distinctions: the Doris Duke Artist Award 2016, the title Pianist of the Year in 2011, 2016 and 2018, conferred on him by the Jazz Journalists Association, and International Jazz Artist of the Year for 2021, awarded by the French Jazz Magazine, among many other honours. The Fred Hersch Trio, who will be performing at the Prague Spring, was voted the number one jazz group in a critics’ poll conducted by the American jazz magazine DownBeat in 2019.

A fixture of the legendary New York club Village Vanguard, Fred Hersch appears in clubs and concert venues all over the world, the Elbphilharmonie among them. He has worked with guitarist Bill Frisell, saxophonists Chris Potter and Joe Lovano and singers Esperanza Spalding, Cécile McLorin Salvant and Renée Fleming. He regularly takes his trio to major jazz festivals in Europe and the USA. He is also a sought-after composer and has been commissioned to write numerous works, for instance, for his great admirer, the pianist Igor Levit, for the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, or for the famous Lucerne Festival. He has recorded more than sixty albums, of which twelve are solo releases. The two most recent albums – The Surrounding Green, which he recorded with his trio, and the solo Silent, Listening – were collaborations with producer Manfred Eicher for the cult ECM label. In demand as a teacher, he has worked at various prominent music schools, including the Juilliard School in New York and the New England Conservatory in Boston. His performances have influenced a whole generation of jazz pianists, among whom we could name renowned pianists and Hersch’s former students Brad Mehldau and Sullivan Fortner, or his friend and colleague Jason Moran.

Fred Hersch, who celebrated his 70th birthday in 2025, has also been campaigning for years for greater awareness of AIDS. In his memoir Good Things Happen Slowly he reveals the story of his life in music, along with a frank account of both his artistic triumphs and his health struggles as the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz musician.

Camilla George was born in the city of Eket, Nigeria and has been interested in music since early childhood. In particular, she listened to saxophonists Jackie McLean and Charlie Parker and the music of the politically engaged Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, considered the king of Afrobeat, a Nigerian genre combining West African tradition with American funk and jazz. She began playing the saxophone at the age of 11, when she won a music competition in which she received lessons on the instrument as a prize. She went on to study with a number of jazz greats and completed the jazz programme at London’s Trinity College of Music. While still a student, she became a member of the acclaimed band Jazz Jamaica. When she released her debut album Isang in 2017, the title of which means “journey” in her native Ibibio language, it was well received by critics and music lovers alike. The Evening Standard hailed the young musician as “the golden girl of jazz.”.

On her latest album Ibio-Ibio, a tribute to the people of her native tribe on the South Nigerian coast, she returned to her African roots and her native language with even greater intensity. The album builds on a hypnotic blend of classical jazz with Afrofuturism and hip-hop. “The bebop scene of Forties and Fifties New York was buzzing with musicians from loads of different styles,” the musician told the Evening Standard. “Proper jazz artists like Miles Davis were incorporating new techniques and sounds, always evolving and changing. Which is what is happening now. In London, LA, New York, everywhere, jazz is being mixed with things like grime, hip-hop and electronica, and it is not any less jazz,” said Camilla – who shares a flat with a black cat named Coltrane – placing her comment in the context of her own work.

While I was a university student, thanks to my mom, who was working at the time for the music agency at the Municipal House, I had the key to the Mayor’s Loge in Smetana Hall on long-term loan. I often used to go there not wearing proper attire, and I would lie on the floor very relaxed, half asleep, listening to those beautiful Prague Spring concerts. More than fifty years have passed, and now I am told that I, myself, will be playing this year at the prestigious festival. What has happened with me and my music over the past half century?

The band Jazz Q will soon be celebrating the 55th year of its long musical life. It has given concerts all around the world and won prizes at many festivals, and it has issued dozens of albums that now have a cult following. One of the recordings (Elegie, 1977) earned significant recognition from an English-language journal as the eighth most influential record of the previous century. With a break during the 1980s, when I was spending more time recording and writing film music, we continued to issue albums, the latest being Amulet in 2020. It also seems that the instrumental concert quartet playing pure-blooded jazz-rock is perhaps the only one in Europe focusing on that genre.

At the end of the 1980s, chance led me to a pivotal encounter with the American Tony Ackerman, who was in Prague at the time studying contemporary classical music. After years of experiments with electric jazz-rock, Tony came up with the idea of a purely acoustical sound, whether in a duo with me or in a trio with the Iranian-Iraqi percussionist Imram Musou Zangi. That combination has to its credit thousands of concerts and 16 albums (the latest, Letopis, dates from 2019) as well as a great deal of recordings for films.

I hope that our concert at the Prague Spring Festival will give you a taste of our music from both worlds.

Since its founding in 1967, Martin Kratochvíl’s group Jazz Q has been a cult phenomenon on the Czech and European music scene. From its jazz beginnings and its victories at a number of European festivals (San Sebastián, Zurich, Wroclaw, Přerov etc.), in ca. 1972 with the arrival of Luboš Andršt and the English singer Joan Duggan, it switched over to a more fundamentally rock-based genre. For several years, perhaps because of its politically immune name, it even replaced the pure rock music scene at a time when such famous rock bands as Blue Effect and Flamengo were facing massive purges and prohibitions. At the time (ca. 1972-75), the group was giving lots of concerts. It travelled all over Europe and Czechoslovakia in particular many times and became the byword of a generation. Jazz Q concerts became a symbol of opposition to the Communist regime, and the group certainly made a significant contribution to the regime’s erosion. In spite of many prohibitions and official harassment, the group held on and kept giving concerts until ca. 1987.

After a long 28 years, the legendary group Jazz Q recorded a new album. “It’s not that the bandleader is lazy; its more my getting away from electric jazz-rock and a greater emphasis on acoustical music with the American guitarist Tony Ackerman in the last few years”, explains Kratochvíl. It is also because of his busy schedule of producing documentary films, series, and travelogues. After the album Znovu, the group issued another CD in 2016, Talisman, which got an excellent reception from the public, followed by Siločáry, and in 2020 by what is so far the latest album, Amulet.

In recent years, Jazz Q has been giving concerts successfully at home and abroad, and it seems that fusion, another name for the jazz-rock synthesis, which the band began in this country years ago, is on its way back to the centre of attention of more perceptive listeners.
