The building was the product of collaboration between the leading Czech architects of the latter half of the 19th century, Josef Zítek and Josef Schulz. The cost of the building’s construction was paid by the bank Česká spořitelna, which was at the time a German financial institution named Böhmische Sparkasse. The bank’s board of directors had decided to erect the magnificent temple of the arts for the 50th anniversary of the founding of Prague’s oldest financial institution. It is the first modern building in Prague designed for complex, multifunction operations.

The whole building exhibits exceptional skill and quality of artistry and craftsmanship, and in its day it was a modern miracle in terms of its highly advanced technical equipment, unprecedented in central Europe. The Municipal House was an expression of the confidence of the Czech nation, in celebration of which the building was conceived. Corresponding to that purpose are its ostentatious decorations and the politically motivated names of its halls.

Between 2003 and 2012, the entire building underwent general reconstruction, the main purpose of which was to restore to the building its appearance as designed by the architect Milan Babuška in the mid-1930s.
