Young Cellists’ Competition Begins: Who Will Follow in the Footsteps of Past Legends?

The CELLO category of the 76th Prague Spring International Music Competition officially opened on May 7 with a festive ceremony in the Bohuslav Martinů Hall. This marks the fourteenth appearance of the cello in the history of this prestigious event.

A total of 42 talented young cellists from 11 countries will compete in the Round I. From this group, a maximum of 12 participants will be selected to advance to the Round II by an esteemed international jury led by Raphael Wallfisch. The jury also includes Natalie Clein, Marc Coppey, Tomáš Jamník, Ľudovít Kanta, Michal Kaňka, and Maria Kliegel.

The Round I repertoire features works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Antonín Dvořák, and Carlo Alfredo Piatti.
