Although Ensemble 18+ specialises chiefly in music from earlier periods, the fascinating historical-industrial space of the National Technical Museum, where the concert will be held, inspired us to create a timeless programme which connects past eras with the modern world,” says Blanka Karnetová, the ensemble’s Artistic Director. “Our concert will take place between two historical locomotives. These steel colossi will set the stage for an evening which will convey the fragile tones of the mechanically precise yet fine texture of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and also the dream-like, mist-swathed music of Claude Debussy.

The concert’s soloist will be harpist Kateřina Englichová, one of our finest performers on this instrument and the holder of the Prague Classic Award for 2018. She has more than forty recordings to her name testifying to the stylistic breadth of her repertoire – from the Baroque to contemporary music, which plays an important role in her artistic career. This beguiling diversity is also reflected in the programme for this concert, which culminates in the world premiere of a new work by Ondřej Kukal, written expressly for Englichová. “Events determine my work,” says the composer. “After completing my Saxofonianna I watched Czech Television’s “13th Chamber” featuring Kateřina Englichová and I just knew what was coming next: Harfenianna. I hope that, through my music, I can bring a bit of joy in difficult times.
